SUPPORTING LONG-TERM DEVELOPMENT IN THE DRYLANDS

UNDP'sSupporttoDrylands Development At the UnitedNations Millennium Summit, world leaders pledged to cut poverty in half by 2015. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is charged with helping to achieve this and other key development goals. UNDP supports the goals of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) to fight poverty and to bring the concerns of the people of the drylandstothe centre of the development agenda. Institutional and management changes within UNDP to improve support to drylands development Drylands development has been apriority of UNDP for over 25 years. During 2001 UNDPfurther strengthened its capacity to supportdrylands development by establishing anew Drylands Development Centre in Nairobi. The Centre is built around the staff and experience of UNSO (Office to Combat Desertification and Drought) that was moved from New York to Nairobi in mid 2001. The Centre is integrated into UNDP'snewlycreated network of Sub-Regional Resource Facilities (SURF) and has been established as: ƒ A Global Centre of Excellence indrylands development ƒ A source for countries of policy advice on drylandsissues ƒ A source of technical advice for countries ondrylands programme development The Centrehas helped sixteen countries to develop an integrated programme for drylands development: Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, The Gambia, Mali, Niger, Morocco and Yemen1. This pilot initiative, which will be expanded to other countries during 2002 and 2003, focuses on: 1. Mainstreamingdrylands issues into macro-economic frameworks including Poverty Reduction Strategies, United Nations Development Assistance Frameworks (UNDAF), and sectoral policies; 2. Reducing vulnerability to climatic shocks and improving adaptation to climate change; 3. Improving local governance for natural resource management.download
